This site is a fun, interactive, animated story for in-house staff to experience “Human Forward” the new brand promise from Randstad. What’s fascinating, is that because it targets a specific demographic, the designers have been able to release a mobile-only experience.

Bitmap Typographer is an minimal site that allows you to design your very own bitmap font. Click on the letter to be designed and click the pixels on the grid to design your own pixel-based alphabet. Once you’ve designed it, type with it to check it out.

Nicholas Feltron

The tenth and final Feltron Annual Report examines the state of state of self-tracking through widely available apps and devices. When the project began in 2005, the music-tracking website Last.fm was the only service capable of automatically capturing a category of personal data. Ten years later, listening habits can be augmented with persistent location data, categories and amounts of physical activity, sleep, weight, continuous heart-rate, blood-alcohol levels, driving habits and computer usage. This report attempts to merge all of this information in a format that reveals connections, provides context and suggests correlations.

While physical retail is certainly changing due to Amazon and other forces, it’s not dead yet, according to my colleague Austin Carr’s recent story in Fast Company’s December/January 2018 issue. He visited a number of retailers that are flourishing in the “retail apocalypse” era and found that successful businesses today feature products that customers can’t get elsewhere–stores that offer satisfying experiences, challenge the fundamental assumptions of commerce, and resurrect the art of selling.

This Startup Is Rebranding Penis Pills And Hair Loss Treatments For Millennials

Hims is the brainchild of Andrew Dudum, a partner at Atomic, the Silicon Valley venture capital firm backed by PayPal billionaire Peter Thiel. The company launched November 1 with its first fleet of products: affordable, direct-to-consumer hair-loss prevention shampoos, serums, vitamins, and pills. It bills itself as “the one-stop shop for trusted self-care solutions.” Today it debuted its next offering: treatments for erectile dysfunction. Eventually the lifestyle brand will expand into skincare, oral hygiene, and dietary supplements.

Anti-baldness medicine isn’t new. Penis pills aren’t new. Moisturizer isn’t new. But talking about them to men in a frank, conversational tone is. Packaging them in neutral-hued bottles is. Rebranding these touchy topics–typically associated with embarrassment and bruised egos–with a young voice is. These products are aimed squarely at insecurities men have grappled with for decades. But like many new wellness and cosmetic brands for women, Hims using design and branding to market to men in a new way–a kind of Goop for men.

Brand

A brand can be broken down into a few components:

The identity of the brand is expressed in its logo, typography, color palette, packaging, and retail environment. 

The tone of the brand is expressed in the attitude of the copy, voice-over, or composition of the layout.

The values of the brand are expressed in the channels the brand's messaging is communicated in, the associations or partnerships it fosters, and the processes the brand uses to do business (think recycling for environmental values, or charities the brand donates to for social or cultural values).

Look at any label on a household product, from laundry detergent to dish soap to shampoo, and you’ll see that most are 80% water.
